History

We were born as a response to the needs of the social reality of our city, since, at that time, the municipalities and sectional authorities were appointed by the government to take care of public welfare services (cemeteries, asylums, hospitals, orphanages).

The municipal president asked the Congress of the Republic to issue a Reformatory Law that would allow the Municipalities to create Boards of Charity. This Law was issued on August 13, 1887, and allowed the administration of hospitals, mental health institutions, and cemeteries to be delegated to the Boards of Charity.

Thus, the Council of Guayaquil resolved in the Municipal Ordinance the creation of the Board of Charity of Guayaquil, which was founded on January 29, 1888 by a group of philanthropists led by Francisco Campos Coello (then President of the Municipal Council), who was concerned about the living conditions of the less favored inhabitants of Guayaquil.

The founders obtained the initial funds thanks to donations and legacies that constituted the cornerstone of their work and commitment to the community. Since then, we have continuously received the support and trust of the community and the selfless contribution of our members, which is why today we are the largest non-governmental non-profit organization in Ecuador.
