The Great Work of Helping

The Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil (JBG) is the largest NGO in Ecuador and unique in its kind in Latin America. Since 1888, it has worked with professionalism, transparency, and solidarity to improve the lives of those most in need, focusing on health, education, inclusion, food, and shelter for vulnerable girls and older adults, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations of the UN.

With a presence in the 221 cantons of the country, its social programs have directly benefited 1.5 million people and impacted more than 4 million throughout Ecuador.

At the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil, we work tirelessly to offer health, education, and welfare services to thousands of Ecuadorians. Our care network includes:

  • Four specialized hospitals (Luis Vernaza, Alfredo G. Paulson, Roberto Gilbert Children’s Hospital, and Institute of Neurosciences), which provide medical care to women, children, adults, and people with mental health problems, with an annual average of 4 million visits.
  • Educational training centers in Guayaquil and several cantons, with a network of 5 educational units and 2 schools, and the goal of expanding to 16 schools nationwide by 2028, providing quality education to thousands of students.
  • Hogar Manuel Galecio, located in Alausí, province of Chimborazo. It welcomes girls between 5 and 17 years of age who receive comprehensive care and training.
  • Two homes for older adults (Hogar del Corazón de Jesús and Hogar San Pedro), the latter located in the Alausí canton, which guarantee well-being to more than 400 older people, offering them a dignified and peaceful life.
  • A free shelter for relatives of patients hospitalized in the JBG health network, who have nowhere to stay.
  • JBG Sports City, a sports training center that currently benefits approximately 15,000 girls, boys, and young people from vulnerable areas, promoting talent and comprehensive development through its projects: JBG Schools, Atlético de Madrid – JBG Academy, and JBG Training Programs.
  • Two cemeteries (General and Panteón Metropolitano), with funeral services and plans exempt from property taxes, to accompany families in difficult times.

At the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil, we work to ensure that more people have access to essential services with dignity. Through the “Solidarity Discount” program, our hospital network provides medical care with reduced rates according to the socioeconomic profile, only by presenting the identity card.

Our Blue Vests travel the country providing free medical care to communities in extreme poverty, where access to health is limited.

In addition, we generate employment for more than 3,000 Ecuadorian families thanks to the sale of National Lottery products.

At the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil, we sustain our social work thanks to the solidarity commitment of thousands of Ecuadorians. More than 70% of the National Lottery’s income is used to finance our programs in health, education, and assistance to vulnerable people.

We supplement these revenues with private services and the valuable support of national and international institutions, which provide us with donations of supplies, medical equipment, and the collaboration of specialized surgical missions.
